interactive investor in a nutshell

interactive investor is a very popular investment platform with a flat monthly fee for its accounts, making it a cheap option for most investors, especially those with larger portfolios. There’s a huge range to choose from, their website and apps are great and their customer service is excellent.

You can invest within a range of investment accounts including a Stocks & Shares ISA (for tax-free investing), a SIPP (self-invested personal pension), to save for retirement, and of course a General Investment Account (GIA), a regular trading account with no tax-free benefits, but no limits.

And, there’s also a Junior ISA, to invest tax-free for your kids (if you have them).

How interactive investor works

It’s your classic investment broker really (and a great one), we say classic as it works in the same way as most brokers – you decide what investments you want to buy or sell, and they take care of it for you. There’s not too many bells and whistles that are different from other brokers.

If you’ve bought investments before, you’ll be very familiar with how everything works.

The biggest difference between interactive investor and other brokers is how they charge fees. Most brokers will charge you a percentage of your investments, whereas interactive investor is a flat fee.

How do interactive investor fees work

interactive investor is one of the lowest cost platforms out there thanks to its flat-fee charging structure – so instead of paying a percentage of your investments, you’ll pay a flat monthly fee for each account.

For instance, with a Stocks and Shares ISA, it’s £4.99 per month and for a pension it’s £5.99 per month if you have investments below £50,000, and £12.99 above that (you can also get a discount if you want both accounts).

You’ll then pay a transaction fee for certain investments, such as buying and selling shares, and this is typically £3.99, but varies depending on the actual investment, and this can reduce to zero if you invest regularly.

Overall, for the range of investment options it offers, the account options, the customer service and the platform itself (which is great), it’s really reasonable, and good value for money – and you could save a fortune versus some other very big name investment platforms.

interactive investor pros and cons

Pros

  • Flat monthly fee
  • Great value for larger portfolios
  • Huge range of investment options
  • Offers an ISA and pension (SIPP)
  • Great customer service

Cons

  • Expensive for small portfolios
  • Not commission free (typically a fee per trade)
  • Not much else!

Our thoughts

We love interactive investor. It’s great.

The fees are very reasonable, and very low if you have lots invested. In fact, you’ll struggle to find somewhere cheaper for the same services and investment range.

However, it’s not the cheapest option if you’re just starting out investing with a smaller portfolio, there's cheaper options, which you can find on our best investment platforms table.

The customer service is excellent, and the investment options are huge – exactly what you’d expect from a top investment broker.

There’s not much to fault at all, overall a great option.
